Learn Something New Everyday!

As I hopped onto my trusty bike, a new adventure was in the making.  Lets face it, Chinese hospital experiences are never boring.  I was kind of hoping for boring, but no such luck.  As I parked my bike outside the largest hospital in SW China, Huaxi Yiyuan, I wondered if I had come to the right building and who I should talk to.  You see, I had been having some medical problems (relating to age and gender).  I thought it might be good to get checked out before it got worse.
Here is a summary of my hospital visit:
1.  I began by going to the wrong office in the wrong building.
2.  I road my bike about 20 minutes to the "Women and Children's Hospital" only to find it overflowing with really sick kids and long lines to see the doctor.
3.  When I went to register to get an appointment, I found that the line just closed for lunch and I should come back in two hours.  (Remember I am on my bike about 30 minutes from home going to the hospital because I've not feeling so well.)
4.  I returned from lunch an hour early so that I could get to the front of the line.
5.  I stood, again not feeling the best, waiting for the window to open to register to just get an appointment.
6.  As I stood in line, two rather stylish ladies "cut" in front of me smiling.  I'm felt a bit "irked" but tried not to stare them down.
7.  One of the ladies (of the two that just cut in front of me) struck up a conversation that turns to asking me if I can teach her 8 year old English.
8.  Through the conversation I realized I needed to register for a hospital ID card before I got into the line. I was on the third floor and the card was on the first..
9.  The ladies who cut in front of me ended up being a huge help.  One held my place in line while the other helped me get an id card.
10.  As we are standing in line, a man came up to us with business cards.  He handed each lady in the line one saying that for 200 Y he will stand in line and get an appointment for anyone who wants to.
11.  All the ladies in the line had a bonding moment talking about why they were waiting for an appointment and showing ultra sound and MRI pics to prove it.  (I just listen!).
12.  An hour passed and as the window was just getting ready to open.  A security guard came up saying that there were no more slots to register for a chance to get an appointment and that we had to come back tomorrow.  Probably close to 100 women groaned and left.  The lady in the front of the line had the necessary paperwork, so she could stay in line.
12.  As I left the hospital, I realized there had to be a better way!!
.......there was!
13.  Many steps transpired of the next two days with the end result of a minor surgical procedure.
14.  As I was getting my blood drawn preparing for the procedure  my doctor (a very good doctor) says to me, "You didn't want anesthesia during that minor surgery did you?"  My response,  "YES, I did want anesthesia!"

  1. Ah, come on, what do ya need anesthesia for? It is cheaper without and you get to watch everything! Ha! I sadly expect this to be our health care system in the very near future. cj
