Most of you seem to get to know your neighbors by helping in times of need. Our family? Well define neighbors. We live in a city of 11 million people, our district has approximately 700,000 people, our neighborhood has at least 7000 people and our apartment complex has about 800. Yes, we have a lot of neighbors but getting to know rather reserved SW Chinese can take a little effort.
Here are our top ways to meet our "neighbors:
Get outside and smile at folks- Taking the time talk to and smile at folks working at restaurants, shops, guarding gates, etc. makes a difference. Some days smiling comes naturally and other days it doesn't. Still we ask for strength to be salt and light!
English Practice
- My time with Harmony,"the recycle lady's" daughter brings me a lot of joy. Harmony has a unique perspective going from an impoverished countryside family to a Junior college student!
Drums!
-"Mr Todd, can you teach us how to play the drums?" Yes, Todd is teaching drums for a bunch of "like minded" college guys.
Walking the Dog
-Taking Chloe, our dog, for a walk is truly a social experience. Sichuanese people love dogs, and Chloe's friendly nature creates a lot of conversation.
Piano
- Teaching piano gives Hillary an opportunity to reach out to the foreign community in our district. The four Asian-American students she works with are a lot of fun!
