When we were back in the US in May and June the doctor informed me (Lisa) that my blood pressure was high. Other doctors had mentioned this before but never seemed very concerned, but this time the doctor wanted me to get things checked out. Although I already get a lot of exercise, I decided more strenuous aerobic exercise would be good, so I started swimming laps.
Swimming laps in city of 12 million people is quite the experience. So how is swimming and biking similar? Crowds of People! As I slipped into the Olympic size pool, I joined the masses. Each lane was filled with no less then twelve other swimmers. As we shared the lane swimming back and forth, it reminded me of riding a bike in Chengdu. The lanes were filled with people swimming different speeds. Some would suddenly slowdown in front of me while others swam into the back of me or around me. People were swimming in every direction possible (biking is the same). The rules of the road had been suspended both in the bike lane and pool.
So how else are swimming and biking the same? Well, you should ask Todd. A week ago he was caught in torrential rain while riding on a bike to lecture at a local hospital. Although he was wearing a sturdy rain poncho and had his computer in a case under the poncho, the water ruined his computer and shorted out the battery on his phone.
