As the small minivan struggled up the mountain, Haley gasped saying, "Look, there's Bei Chuan." Bei Chuan, even the sound of the name of this city opens painful wounds of the May 12, 2008 quake. Here we, the girls and I, were teaching kindergarten children in villages only a stones through away from the destroyed city. Don't take me wrong, the whole area, mile upon mile was totally destroyed, but all the other areas are being rebuilt. Only Bei Chuan City was left as a memorial to the dead. Actually, Bei Chuan is the burial grounds for many people who were buried under the ruins of the city.
We will be returning to BeiChuan once a month to teach English to kindergarten children. The tiring six hour trip (round trip) is more than worth the effort. Please continue to lift up our family as we follow His leading to work with earth quake victims in Sichuan.
Here is a NPR news link that talks more about the May 12, 2008 earth quake. The interactive links are very interesting.
